Who are we?
Beanies4Babies is a non-profit organisation, (NPO 303-613) that strives to fight hypothermia (core body temperature lower than 36.5C) in all low-birth-weight babies (less than 2.5kg’s) born in the public health sector of South Africa.
We do this by supplying beanies and socks to as many public hospitals and clinics as possible so that these items can be given to these babies directly after birth.
The need
Many of the babies in the Neonatal ICU were born prematurely and are critically ill. Low birth weight and preterm babies have an increased risk for hypothermia (low body temperature) because they cannot regulate their own body temperature effectively. They need extra thermal care to help them stay warm, including incubators, blankets, skin-to-skin contact, beanies and socks. Many of the public hospitals have limited resources to keep these babies warm and often, the moms do not have the means to provide their preterm infant with a beanie and socks.
Our dream
We would love to be able to provide comfort and support to as many premature and low birth weight babies in our country as possible. Our dream to expand nationwide, is slowly becoming a reality and we currently have branches in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Bethlehem, Gqeberha, George and Cape Town. We are always looking for people in the community to help us to expand this project to other cities and health care facilities.
Why choose us?
In Africa, the prevalence of hypothermia in low-birth-weight babies born in hospitals, ranges from 42- 85%.
In South Africa 1 in 7 babies is born prematurely every year.
Interventions to keep newborns warm, can mitigate neonatal mortality by 18 – 42%.
Beanies 4 Babies is a registered NPO (NPO 303-613) that helps fight hypothermia in over 1000 babies in public hospitals in South Africa every month. We have been able to provide over 20 000 products (beanies and pairs of socks) to babies since the start of our project in 2018.
We currently have 7 branches and we need a minimum of R5000 per month to provide enough stock to all our branches.
We would like to expand our project to more facilities and more provinces, and to do this, we would need an additional R4000 per branch per year (launch costs included).
We need the support of individuals and organizations in order to continue with our work- YOU can make a difference in the lives of these tiny miracles.
How to get involved
Beanies and socks for this project are knitted by various volunteers from all over the country. To keep this project running, we need…
