Who are we?
The Beanies 4 Babies Project was created by a group of health science students from the University of the Free State. While working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein, we had the privilege of meeting the tiny miracles who came through the doors of the NICU.
Their fighting spirits inspired us to reach out and make a difference.
The need
Many of the babies in the NICU were born prematurely and are critically ill. Preterm infants have an increased risk for hypothermia (low body temperature) because they cannot regulate their body temperature effectively. They need extra thermal care including incubators, blankets, skin-to-skin contact, beanies and socks. Many of the moms do not have the means to provide their preterm infant with beanies and socks.
Our dream
Our dream is to provide comfort and support to premature infants born in the public hospitals of South Africa by providing each infant with his or her own pair of knitted socks and a beanies. This will be given to them as soon as they are born or arrive in the NICU and will be taken home with them when they are discharged. Our dream to expand nationwide has slowly become a reality as we are currently delivering in Bloemfontein, PE, Johannesburg, Pretoria, the Vaal Triangle and expanding to the Western Cape.

How to get involved
Beanies and socks for this project are knitted by various volunteers from all over the country. Our latest expansion to Gauteng and soon the Western Cape is gaining momentum and we are excited to welcome any and all support in order to launch there in 2023. To keep this project running, we need…
Volunteer your time by knitting beanies and socks. You can either use your own wool or request us to send you wool to get you started.
Beanies 4 babies is a registered NPO and induviduals can donate easily by clicking on this button or corporate companies can deposit directly into our bank and will recieve a certificate
Any wool donations are welcome. The wool needs to be soft / usable for babies. please contact us to arrange a drop off point or arrange collection from you
